in this world and the next.

grant that we may celebrate the feast which are pleasing
to you today and all the days of our lives.
And we shall give praise to you, your Father, and
your Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.
GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.
PRAISE OF THE ANGELS
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.
Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples,
for steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Glory to you, Most High,
you are enthroned in the splendor of your divinity
and hidden in your eternal light.
the cherubim serve you and the seraphim give you praise, singing together in one voice: “Holy, holy, holy.”
You willed to be born poor and weak in a cave and were
wrapped in swaddling clothes.
In your mercy grant that we may praise you as did the angels
of heaven,
and we shall give you glory,
now and for ever. Amen.
PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Let justice descend, O heavens, like dew from above, like
gentle rain let the skies drop it down.
Isaiah 42: 10-13; 45: 8
Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise from the end of the earth:
Let the sea and what fills it resound,
the coastlands, and those who dwell in them.
Let the steppe and its cities cry out,
the villages where Kedar dwells;
Let the inhabitants of Sela exult,
and shout from the top of the mountains.
Let them give glory to the Lord,
and utter his praise in the coastland.
The Lord goes forth like a hero,
like a warrior he stirs up his ardor;
He shouts out his battle cry,
against his enemies he shows his might:
Let justice descend, O heavens, like dew from above;
like gentle rain let the skies drop it down.
Let the earth open and salvation bud forth;
let justice also spring up!
I, the Lord, have created this.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.
Antiphon:
Let justice descend, O heavens, like dew from above, like
gentle rain let the skies drop it down.
SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Lord,
you are the marvel which surpasses all description and
understanding.
From your heights, you humbled yourself and were received in
the pure womb of Mary;
you, the life-giving bread from heaven, were put in a manger of animals.
Grant that we may give you glory,
now and for ever. Amen.
EVENING PSALMS
Psalm 141:1-4
O Lord, to you I call; hasten to me;
harken to my voice when I call upon you.
Let my prayer come like incense before you;
the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.
O Lord, set a watch before my mouth,
a guard at the door of my lips.
Let not my heart incline to the evil
of engaging in deeds of wickedness
With men who are evildoers;
and let me not partake of their dainties.
Psalm 142
With aloud voice I cry out to the Lord;
with a loud voice I beseech the Lord.
My complaint I pour out before him;
before him I lay bare my distress.
When my spirit is faint within me,
you know my path.
In the way along which I walk
they have hid a trap for me.
I look to the right to see,
but there is no one who pays me heed.
I have lost all means of escape;
there is no one who cares for my life.
I cry out to you, O Lord:
I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land
of the living.”
Attend to my cry,
for I am brought low indeed.
Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.
Lead me forth from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.
The just shall gather around me
when you have been good to me.
Psalm 119: 105-112
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.
I resolve and swear
to keep your just ordinances.
I am very much afflicted;
O Lord, give me life according to your word.
Accept, O Lord, the free homage of my mouth,
and teach me your decrees.
Though constantly I take my life in my hands,
yet I forget not your law.
The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but from your precepts I have not strayed.
Your decrees are my inheritance forever;
the joy of my heart they are.
I intend in my heart to fulfill you statutes
always to the letter.
Psalm 117
Praise the Lord, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!
For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.
Alleluia.
[HYMN]
ˇ
The Hymn, “The Resurrection of Christ” (page 165) may
be sung following the Evening Psalms.
HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the Most High,
in his love he humbled himself to become like us
and was born as an infant in Bethlehem;
the inhabitants of heaven and earth came to adore him.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this evening,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.
SEDRO
Glory to you, almighty and magnificent Son who has neither
beginning or end.
You willed to be born as an infant,
and became flesh without the perfection of your divinity
being affected.
You are the hidden mystery and made yourself be seen as a man
without revealing in any way the secret of your being.
You give richness to creatures and yet understand poverty.
You satisfy the hungry and yet have been hungry for your
Mother’s milk.
The seraphim sing to you: “Holy, holy, holy;”
the cherubim carry you on a fiery chariot,
yet you allowed your Mother to carry you in her arms
and rock you to sleep with her songs.
O Child, ancient of days, wrapped in swaddling clothes,
the shepherds of Bethlehem and the wise men came to
adore you.
In heaven the angels gather to sing:
“Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth.”
In joy and exultation, the Church on earth prepares for
your birth.
May we join with heavenly brings in praising you and celebrating you feast with joy.
We shall glorify you, your Father, and you Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.
QOLO
Lord, your flock rejoices and sings of your glory on the occasion of your birth because you have saved us through your humility.
Free us from every bond and chain of sin.
On the day of your birth, the angels came down to announce
your presence to mankind. Grant us joy and salvation, and we
shall join with them and sing your praises for ever.
On the day of your birth, the wise men came from the East to
offer you their gifts. Accept our prayers along with their gifts.
The shepherds saw the child in the cave, believed in him and
offered him their gifts. Accept our offering with their gifts. With all nations and peoples, we shall sing a song of thanksgiving
because of your saving birth.
ETRO
O God,
accept this incense (our prayers) and receive us in your grace.
Watch over your flock which awaits your coming and prepares
itself for your birth.
Have mercy on us and our dead.
May we enter into your kingdom and we shall offer you glory,

MAZMOORO
Glory to you, O hidden One, by your incarnation and birth, you have saved us. Blessed are you now and for ever.
Heavens, drop down you dew and may the skies pour forth the
just One. May the earth open up that salvation might ripen.
May deliverance also bloom forth.
You accepted the prayers of the just before us,
now accept, Lord, our prayers and have mercy on us.
SYNAXARION
We find that there are two versions of the genealogy of Jesus in the New Testament. One is in Matthew (12: 1-17) and another is in Luke (3: 23-38). The basic aim of any such list of descendants in the scriptures, is the connection of each era to God’s progressive plan of salvation which reaches its fulfillment in Christ.
The genealogy of Matthew emphasizes that Jesus is the fulfillment of all the promises God made to Abraham and David. One notes that there are four women, perhaps all gentiles, in the list.
The inclusion of these women may serve to indicate that Jesus came to save all mankind and not just the Jews (Mt. 28: 19). David, a sinner guilty of adultery and murder (2 Samuel 11: 6), is also included in the list, thus indicating that Jesus, who was without sin, was fully immersed in the sinfulness of humanity.
The genealogy of Luke’s gospel is even more obvious in indicating the universal mission of Jesus. He goes back from Jesus, to Abraham, and all the way back to Adam, the son of God; thus he shows Jesus as the New Adam, who begets a new humanity.
The two genealogies are quite diverse in the personages included. In fact, they agree only on two names from David to Joseph. Matthew’s royal lineage supports his concept of messianic fulfillment while Luke may have been more authentic in tracing the line through Nathan. In any case, one finds that the theological purpose of the genealogies supersedes any consideration for factual accuracy. The intention of the lists is to demonstrate that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that had been prophesied in the Old Testament. The covenant that the Lord established with David will stand forever: “The Lord says that his covenant with David stands firm and he will make his posterity endure forever and his throne as the days of heaven” (Ps. 89: 29-30).
Not only does the psalmist assure us that the covenant with David and his posterity will last forever, but Jeremiah the prophet tells us that one of David’s descendants will appear and rule as a glorious king:
“The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the
promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah.
In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall be safe and Jerusalem shall dwell secure; this is what they shall call her: “The Lord our Justice.”
For thus says the Lord: Never shall David lack a successor on the throne of the house of Israel, nor shall priests of Levi ever be lacking.
Micah tells us that the great king will come from Bethlehem: “But you Bethlehem Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth one for me who is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is from old, from ancient times” (Micah 5: 1).
Isaiah tells us that the sign that will be given to the people is that the child will be born of a virgin: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child and bear a son and shall call him Emmanuel” (Isaiah 7: 14).
He also describes the Messiah, beginning with the statement that he will spring from the root of Jesse:
“But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding.
A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord.
Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, but he shall judge the poor with justice and decide aright for the land’s afflicted.
He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.
Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his lips (Isaiah 11: 1-5)
The genealogies call us to trust in the salvific plan of God: all will be brought to fulfillment by the Lord in his own time and in his own way. In spite of difficulties, we are called to trust in the promises of the Lord. Jesus himself, the Son of the Father promised, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not” (Luke 21: 33).
SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Book of Genesis
Genesis 49: 1-2, 8-13
Jacob called his sons and said: “Gather around, that I may tell you what is to happen to you in days to come. “Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob, listen to Israel, your father.
“You, Judah, shall your brothers praise — your hand on the neck of your enemies; the sons of your father shall bow down to you. Judah, like a lion’s whelp, you have grown up on prey, my son. He crouches like a lion recumbent, the king of beasts — who would dare rouse him? The scepter shall never depart from Judah, or the mace from between his legs, While tribute is brought to him, and he receives the peoples’ homage. He tethers his donkey to the vine, his purebred ass to the choicest stem. In wine he washes his garments, his robe in the blood of grapes. His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk. “Zebulun shall dwell by the seashore [This means a shore for ships], and his flank shall be based on Sidon.
A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 18: 9-22
“When you come into the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, you shall not learn to imitate the abominations of the peoples there. Let there not be found among you anyone who immolates his son or daughter in the fire, nor a fortune-teller, soothsayer, charmer, diviner, or caster of spells, nor one who consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead. Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the LORD, and because of such abominations the LORD, your God, is driving these nations out of your way. You, however, must be altogether sincere toward the LORD, your God. Though these nations whom you are to dispossess listen to their soothsayers and fortune-tellers, the LORD, your God, will not permit you to do so. “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to him you shall listen. This is exactly what you requested of the LORD, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor see this great fire any more, lest we die.’ And the LORD said to me, ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him. f any man will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I myself will make him answer for it. But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die.’
“If you say to yourselves, ‘How can we recognize an oracle which the LORD has spoken?’, know that, even though a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if his oracle is not fulfilled or verified, it is an oracle which the LORD did not speak. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously, and you shall have no fear of him.
SUPPLICATION
Sing praise, sing: “Holy, holy, holy” to the Son of Mary, as the angels praised him in Jerusalem.
Sing praise, sing: “Holy, holy,holy” to the Son of God, as
heavenly beings praise him at all times.
The heavens have poured forth the just One and salvation has
come among us.
Where are you, O Son of God; in a chariot borne by cherubim or in the arms of Mary? Surrounded by splendor and light or
wrapped in swaddling clothes in a cave:
He lived in the womb and all those who were in the womb desire his coming. He was born an infant and he sent his star to
guide those who were far away. He was laid down in a cave
and the angels surround him and sing him beautiful hymns.
What a marvel to see him as an infant wrapped in swaddling
clothes, the One who men venerate and angels revere.
In heaven, the angels bear him in his chariot, and on earth Joseph and his mother serve him.
The choirs of the beings of light glorify him in heaven, and
on earth the sons of Adam praise him.
Blessed be the One who became flesh and saved mankind.
Glory to the hidden One who made himself be seen as Word made
flesh, to the Son of God made man.
Joy to the Church in memory of his birth.
O Christ, glory and praise to you for ever.
Let us remember the prophets, apostles and martyrs, all those
who have worked in the vineyard of the Lord: Saint James,
Saint Maron and his companions, Saint Ephrem, harp of the
Holy Spirit. O God, through their prayers, strengthen the
weak, comfort the sick, grant pardon to the dead and
forgive the faults of us poor sinners.
Exalt, O Lord, the memory of your Mother and your saints;
through their prayers grant pardon to us and our deceased.
Through the prayers of your Mother, the prophets, apostles
and martyrs, watch over the living, and in your mercy,
forgive those who have died.
HOOTOMO
Let us thank, adore, and praise the holy and glorious Trinity: Father, Son, ✛Holy Spirit. Amen.
