PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
we ask you to hear our request and pour your mercy
upon us.
May your cross guard us today,
so that we may meditate upon your words.
May we live your life and pass this day for your glory and our sanctification,
and we shall give you glory,
now and for ever.
PSALM OF THE DAY
PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Come! Behold the deeds of the Lord,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth.
Psalm 46
God is our refuge and our strength,
and ever-present help in distress.
Therefore we fear not, though the earth be shaken
and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea;
Though its waters rage and foam
and the mountains quake at its surging.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High.
God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed;
God will help it at the break of dawn.
Though nations are in turmoil, kingdoms totter,
God will help it at the break of dawn.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Come! behold the deeds of the Lord,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth:
He has stopped wars to the end of the earth:
the bow he breaks; he splinters the spears;
he burns the shields with fire.
Desist! and confess that I am God,
exalted among the nations, exalted upon the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Antiphon:
Come! Behold the deeds of the Lord,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth.
[HYMN]
Blessed are you, O Church, garden of the Beloved!
From a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, you have grown.
Your roots are in firm soil, sheltered from the winds; In your branches are the martyrs, they are a display of blood shed for the faith.
The birds quench their thirst at this marvel.
Psalms and prophecies fill your vast space.
You are the land of the Spirit, the meeting place of the nations.
Blessed are you, dwelling place of the guest, neighbor of the One who is near.
SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Light who shines upon the world,
the world owes glory to you for your mercy.
You wished to dwell among us,
to be our intercessor with the Father,
who sent you for our salvation.
Give us strength, O Lord,
so that we may implore your forgiveness and ask
for grace and mercy during this blessed Lent.
We shall give glory to you,
now and for ever. Amen.
NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus, our Lord, Begotten of the Father, he manifested himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of his light.
Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.
His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.
Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.
He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.
Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.
Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with hope and salvation.
When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.
The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.
Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
[HYMN]
Glory to you, O marvelous One, our Light,
Your pure light has dispersed the darkness,
And creatures are illumined by the glow of your countenance.
We raise our plea to Christ, the Most High,
Who manifested himself to us in his hidden glory.
Let us rejoice together in sweet hope;
Our night will end and the dawn will appear.
Then we shall behold your splendid light.
THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Good Shepherd,
who came to look for the lost sheep,
loving Master, who fasted to teach us that we do not
live on bread alone,
grant that we may not become slaves of our passions.
Be for us the food that does not perish, and the drink that quenches our thirst forever.
We shall recognize and believe in you alone,
and your Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.
MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;
Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for he commanded and they were created;
He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.
Praise the LORD from the earth;
you see monsters and all depths;
Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;
You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;
You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.
Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,
Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,
Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.
Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.
Alleluia.
Psalm 149: 1-6
Alleluia.
Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.
For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.
Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;
Let the high praises of God be in their throats.
Alleluia.
Psalm 150
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.
Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.
Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.
Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.
Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.
Let everything that has breath
praise the LORD!
Alleluia.
Psalm 117

glorify him, all you peoples!
For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Alleluia.
HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the holy and merciful One, by his stewardship he showed us the way to salvation, lifted us from our fall, and strengthened us
so that we may walk in the way of his commandments, and reach his kingdom.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.
SEDRO
Christ our God,
begotten of the Father from all eternity, and born in time from the Virgin Mary,
you have walked among us as the Good Shepherd
looking for the wandering sheep to bring it back to the good pasture and to the security of the fold.
You desired to share with us the joy of the Trinity;
you humbled yourself, becoming like us in all things
but sin.
On this Friday morning as we commemorate your life-giving suffering and our salvation,
we adore you, O Christ, our King, and we thank and praise you for all that you have done for us.
During this blessed Lent may we meditate on your passion, carry your cross and follow you,
that we may reach the glory of your resurrection.
May we understand that he who does not renounce himself, take up his cross follow you, is not worthy of you.
This time is a time of fasting, repentance and prayer, when we must take you for our model and walk in your steps.
It is a sacred time when we receive grace and mercy.
Brothers and sisters, with humility, let us repent;
let us bend our knees in contemplation of the cross of our Savior.
With tears, let us strike our chests and in silence listen to the voice of God within us.
Through the intercession of your Mother, the prophets, apostles, fathers and martyrs, the just and saints, we implore your kindness and compassion;
have mercy upon us and our dead;
remember them in your kingdom.
We shall give glory to you, your Father and your Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
QOLO
Behold the time when our Lord fasted, and thus saved us. Come and take refuge in it for your salvation.
Through fasting, we shall triumph over the evil one; through fasting we shall triumph over anger, hatred and pride; by it we shall drive away greed the source of all evils.
Blessed are you, O Christ, who gave holy Lent to the Church, your spouse; Lord, give us your love.
ETRO
O Lord,
grant that we may be an incense consumed in your presence.
Accept our fast and our prayer;
may we be agreeable to you all the days of our lives.
Then we shall give thanks for your mercy towards us,
for you give strength to those who fast and forgiveness to the repentant.
To you be glory for ever. Amen.

Repent, sinners, repent while there is yet time. On the day of judgement, you will enter with the just into the paradise of light.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Book of Job
Job 23: 1-17
Again Job answered and said: Though I know my complaint is bitter, his hand is heavy upon me in my groaning. Oh, that today I might find him, that I might come to his judgment seat! I would set out my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments; I would learn the words with which he would answer, and understand what he would reply to me. Even should he contend against me with his great power, yet, would that he himself might heed me! There the upright man might reason with him, and I should once and for all preserve my rights. But if I go to the east, he is not there; or to the west, I cannot perceive him; Where the north enfolds him, I behold him not; by the south he is veiled, and I see him not. Yet he knows my way; if he proved me, I should come forth as gold. My foot has always walked in his steps; his way I have kept and have not turned aside. From the commands of his lips I have not departed; the words of his mouth I have treasured in my heart. But he had decided, and who can say him nay? What he desires, that he does. For he will carry out what is appointed for me; and many such things may yet be in his mind. Therefore am I dismayed before him; when I take thought, I fear him.
Indeed God has made my courage fail; the Almighty has put me in dismay. Yes, would that I had vanished in darkness, and that thick gloom were before me to conceal me.
