Monday Morning the Healing of the Paralytic
MONDAY Safro
INTRODUCTION
DOXOLOGY
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.
OPENING PRAYER
Lord God,
may we remain in your presence all the days of our lives, offering you praise and thanksgiving, prayer and fasting, so that pure and chaste,
just and sanctified,
strangers to all sin and every evil intention,
we may glorify the Trinity,
now and for ever. Amen.
GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.
PRAISE OF THE ANGELS
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.
Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!
For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.
PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O God,
may we submit to this holy fast
and accept it with all our will, with joy and good cheer; do not make us strangers to the reward given to those who fast.
Walking in the way of penitence and mortification
we shall arrive in the eternal kingdom where we shall praise your glory, for ever. Amen.
PSALM OF THE DAY
PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Come! Behold the deeds of the Lord,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth.
Psalm 46
God is our refuge and our strength,
and ever-present help in distress.
Therefore we fear not, though the earth be shaken
and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea;
Though its waters rage and foam
and the mountains quake at its surging.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High.
God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed;
God will help it at the break of dawn.
Though nations are in turmoil, kingdoms totter,
God will help it at the break of dawn.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Come! behold the deeds of the Lord,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth:
He has stopped wars to the end of the earth:
the bow he breaks; he splinters the spears;
he burns the shields with fire.
Desist! and confess that I am God,
exalted among the nations, exalted upon the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Antiphon:
Come! Behold the deeds of the Lord,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth.
[HYMN]
Blessed are you, O Church, garden of the Beloved!
From a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, you have grown.
Your roots are in firm soil, sheltered from the winds; In your branches are the martyrs, they are a display of blood shed for the faith.
The birds quench their thirst at this marvel.
Psalms and prophecies fill your vast space.
You are the land of the Spirit, the meeting place of the nations.
Blessed are you, dwelling place of the guest, neighbor of the One who is near.
SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord
strengthen us in faith, hope and love.
Give us strength and holiness in these holy and pure days of fasting; lead us to your presence by perfect lives
so that we may joyfully meet you on the feast of your glorious Easter and victorious resurrection
and praise and thank you, O Christ, Light of our lives, and the Father and the Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.
NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus, our Lord, Begotten of the Father, he manifested himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of his light.
Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.
His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.
Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.
He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.
Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.
Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with hope and salvation.
When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.
The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.
Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
[HYMN]
At the end of time, when the combat will end,
You will come in glory for the final gathering of the bridal party; You will revive the dead who are sleeping, the scattered and the corrupt;
You will judge your servants with love – this is the happiness of paradise.
What has not occurred to the human heart and what the ear has not heard,
You have prepared as a reward for the combatants, at the fullness of time.
THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
during this holy Lent may we
quell the inclinations and passions of the body,
purify our hearts of hate, jealousy, pride and
anger,
arm ourselves with justice and holiness,
and proceed on the way to perfection.
Then we will raise to you a hymn of pure praise
and angelic songs,
now and for ever. Amen.
MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;
Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for he commanded and they were created;
He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.
Praise the LORD from the earth;
you see monsters and all depths;
Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;
You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;
You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.
Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,
Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,
Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.
Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.
Alleluia.
Psalm 149: 1-6
Alleluia.
Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.
For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.
Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;
Let the high praises of God be in their throats.
Alleluia.
Psalm 150
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.
Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.
Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.
Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.
Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.
Let everything that has breath
praise the LORD!
Alleluia.
Psalm 117
Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!
For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Alleluia.
HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the Father who give life;
to the Son who by his fasting has traced for us the
way of salvation and the path of truth;
to the Spirit who has sanctified us and armed us with his power,
the glorious and living Trinity, to whom is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.
SEDRO
Christ our God,
true Light which comes into the world from the Father, source of blessing and holiness,
purity, mercy and compassion.
From you every good thing comes to us,
and by you we are able to struggle for justice and truth.
You humbled yourself and took the condition of a slave to save us and lead us on the way to the kingdom which is humility.
The prophets spoke of you,
just and righteous men pointed you out,
the apostles preached you, and confessors witnessed
to you.
You are the good Master, and apart from you there is no goodness.
You are the Light of the world without whom there is
only darkness.
When you desired to begin your preaching ministry among us, you isolated yourself in the desert and fasted and prayed in order to teach us that by fasting and prayer, we obtain the mercy and grace of God.
Teach us now, O Lord, to fast and pray:
by fasting and prayer our ancestors were sanctified and returned to their Lord,
and sinners were led along the right way.
By fasting and prayer the fathers mortified their human passion so that you alone might live in them.
Allow us, then, to understand the power of fasting and prayer throughout these holy days.
Help us to struggle during this Lent
in order to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Then our voices will serve only to praise you,
our ears to hear your Word and your teaching of life, our hearts, to be pure temples nourished by your sacred body and blood,
and our souls, mirrors where your splendor and beauty are reflected.
Now, Lord, we ask you to accept our incense (prayer) and have mercy on us.
Pardon our faults,
in your loving kindness heal our illnesses,
give joy to those who suffer,
console the sad, bring back to life those who have died in your hope, and we will glorify and praise you, your Father and your Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
QOLO
In your fast, O Lord, you gather your entire flock that we may adore you and receive your forgiveness.
Hear us, Lord, and by fasting and prayer, deliver us from evil.
Brothers and sisters, let us work and strive with love, thus we will cultivate the fruits of penance and pardon.
Holy are you, O God, you have given your flock this Lent during which we proceed to your kingdom.
Holy are you, O Strong One, by your fast you conquered the evil one, our enemy.
Holy are you, O Immortal One, by your death you gave life to the world and saved us from defeat.
You were crucified for us and you save us from death; by your cross you have freed us.
Behold by prayer and fasting the children of the Church beg you: forgive their sins, O Holy One. To you be glory for ever.
ETRO
O Lover of all,
accept our prayer as you accepted the prayer of the
just before us.
Grant our petitions as you granted the prayers of the prophets and messengers;
forgive our sins as you forgave the sins of Mary Magdalene; be compassionate toward us as you were toward sinners and the contrite of heart.
For you are merciful and filled with loving kindness; to you be praise, for ever. Amen.
READINGS
MAZMOORO
Behold the merciful Doctor comes; you who are fasting, come, let him heal you; in his loving kindness he pardons sins.
Let it be proclaimed from the mountain tops: Behold, the merciful Doctor comes; you who are fasting, covered with wounds and sins, offer him praise.
Be opened, O holy books; you who are fasting, listen! Hear the words of the prophets who speak by the Holy Spirit.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Book of Job
Job 11: 1-20
And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said: Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right? Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke? Shall you say: “My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight”? But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you, And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt. Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty? It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know? It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea. If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay? For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it? Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile? If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him, If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent, Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid. For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away. Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning, And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety, and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor, but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.
