May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.
OPENING PRAYER
Lord God,
teach us your decrees and make us know your laws.
Give us the strength to observe them
and help us to stand in your presence this morning, chaste and pure.
Then we shall be well armed this Lent
and fight the good fight all the days of our lives,
and for ever. Amen.
GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.
PRAISE OF THE ANGELS
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.
Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!
For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.
PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Christ Jesus, good Physician,
in your mercy you came to cure and forgive us.
On this morning open our eyes to your light.
Accept our repentance,
and we shall adore and glorify you, with your
Father and your Holy Spirit,
for ever. Amen.
PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
To you I lift up my eyes who are enthroned
in heaven.
Psalm 123
To you I lift up my eyes
who are enthroned in heaven.
Behold, as the eyes of servants
are on the hands of their masters,
As the eyes of a maid
are on the hands of her mistress,
So are our eyes on the Lord, our God,
till he have pity on us.
Have pity on us, O Lord, have pity on us,
for we are more than sated with contempt;
Our souls are more than sated
with the mockery of the arrogant,
with the contempt of the proud.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Antiphon:
To you I lift up my eyes who are enthroned
in heaven.
[HYMN]
Blessed are you, O Church, garden of the Beloved!
From a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, you have grown.
Your roots are in firm soil, sheltered from the winds; In your branches are the martyrs, they are a display of blood shed for the faith.
The birds quench their thirst at this marvel.
Psalms and prophecies fill your vast space.
You are the land of the Spirit, the meeting place of the nations.
Blessed are you, dwelling place of the guest, neighbor of the One who is near.
SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
make us holy temples
so that your grace may be manifested in us, and your
will be accomplished by us.
May your face be a shelter for us, for it is in you that we hope.
O Christ, Source of light and Light of our life,
glory be to you, for ever. Amen.
NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus, our Lord, Begotten of the Father, he manifested himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of his light.
Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.
His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.
Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.
He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.
Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.
Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with hope and salvation.
When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.
The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.
Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
[HYMN]
Glory to you, O marvelous One, our Light,
Your pure light has dispersed the darkness,
And creatures are illumined by the glow of your countenance.
We raise our plea to Christ, the Most High,
Who manifested himself to us in his hidden glory.
Let us rejoice together in sweet hope;
Our night will end and the dawn will appear.
Then we shall behold your splendid light.
THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
may our tongues praise you and our lips glorify you in this time of penance.
Thus our praise will rise to you from chaste hearts
and pure minds
and we will glorify the Father, the Son and the living Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;
Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for he commanded and they were created;
He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.
Praise the LORD from the earth;
you see monsters and all depths;
Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;
You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;
You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.
Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,
Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,
Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.
Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.
Alleluia.
Psalm 149: 1-6
Alleluia.
Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.
For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.
Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;
Let the high praises of God be in their throats.
Alleluia.
Psalm 150
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.
Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.
Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.
Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.
Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.
Let everything that has breath
praise the LORD!
Alleluia.
Psalm 117
Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!
For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Alleluia.
HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the One who hears the
prayers of those who call upon him with faith,
the merciful Lord who in his goodness wished to save us, and in his kindness desired to heal our wounds.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.
SEDRO
O Christ, our God,
King of the universe, the life of souls and bodies,
You have borne our faults and sins to make of us children of God and heirs of the kingdom.
Without you, there is no life, and outside of your teaching there is no nourishment;
you performed signs to show us the light and the way.
Hear our requests today and incline your ear towards us; keep us as the apple of your eye,
and protect us, who believe in you and adore your cross, under the shadow of your wings.
Guard your Church against the snares of the enemy, because she believes in you.
Give strength to pastors to teach your gospel,
confirm your priests to keep your commandments,
sanctify the deacons, protect the virgins, help those who are in need.
Enlighten the eyes of the rich,
that they may walk in the way of your precepts of justice and charity;
bless families, help parents in the Christian education of their children,
sow true joy in the hearts of the young,
teach your laws to children,
cure the sick, strengthen those who vacillate in their faith, purify hearts full of rancor and hatred.
During this blessed lent, may your blessings be poured abundantly upon us.
Remember our parents and brothers and sisters who have left us, and with them we shall give glory to you, your Father and Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.
QOLO
Blessed is the Lord who gave fasting and prayer as a beacon for his holy Church. All nations are enlightened by her and they glorify him.
Holy are you, O God, for the love of us you give us life.
Holy are you, O Strong One, you fasted for us, that we may have the strength to fast for you.
Holy are you, O Immortal One, you died for us and thus gave us life.
O Christ, crucified for us, by your death, you have triumphed over the evil one and taught us victory.
Blessed is he who saved us; happy is the one who breaks bread with the hungry and needy.
ETRO
Generous Giver of good things,
open your hands to your creatures, and pour your mercy upon them.
Bless your children, sons and daughters of the baptism of forgiveness.
Accept their prayers, fasts and sacrifices and pardon their faults, that you alone may reign over their hearts,
now and for ever. Amen.
READINGS
MAZMOORO
Glory to the Son, who has been sent to us by the Father; he healed our wounds and forgave our faults.
Your servants whom you have granted pardon, O Lord, recognize you, and those you have healed, praise you.
Glory to the One, who said to the penitent: Ask and you will receive, knock and it will be opened to you.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Book of Job
Job 36: 1-12
Elihu proceeded further and said: Wait yet a little and I will instruct you, for there are still words to be said on God’s behalf. I will bring my knowledge from afar, and to my Maker I will accord the right. For indeed, my theme cannot fail me: the one perfect in knowledge I set before you. Behold, God rejects the obstinate in heart; he preserves not the life of the wicked. He withholds not the just man’s rights, but grants vindication to the oppressed, And with kings upon thrones he sets them, exalted forever. Or if they are bound with fetters and held fast by bonds of affliction, Then he makes known to them what they have done and their sins of boastful pride. He opens their ears to correction and exhorts them to turn back from evil. If they obey and serve him, they spend their days in prosperity, their years in happiness. But if they obey not, they perish; they die for lack of knowledge.
