Monday of Passion Week (Sunday Evening)

MONDAY OF PASSION WEEK Ramsho

INTRODUCTION

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
O Lord,
may we share in your saving passion
and be bathed in your blessed joy.
Grant us an increase in love,
the strength to conquer temptation,
and the perseverance to follow your teachings,
so that we may be united to you and praise you,
now and for ever. Amen.

GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ the Lord,
sanctify us and endow us with a spirit of repentance, the resolve to perform good deeds,
and the virtue of renunciation.
May we worship you in spirit and in truth
share in your life-giving passion,
and praise you, your Father, and your Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold,
his searching glance is on mankind.

Psalm 11
In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to me,
“Flee to the mountain like a bird!

For, see, the wicked bend the bow;
they place the arrow on the string to shoot in the
dark at the upright of heart.

When the pillars are overthrown,
what can the just man do?”

The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.

His eyes behold,
his searching glance is on mankind.

The Lord searches the just and the wicked;
the lover of violence he hates.

He rains upon the wicked fiery coals and brimstone;
a burning blast is their allotted cup.

For the Lord is just, he loves just deeds;
the upright shall see his face.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold,
his searching glance is on mankind.

HYMN
When the Church saw the brilliant Sun of Justice
hanging on the wood of the cross,
she was filled with sadness and cried abundantly.
Seeing his wounds and the marks of the nails,
she knelt and said to him:
“My beloved, my children and I adore you who died for us.”

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ,
guide us on your path to Golgotha.
Bearing our crosses, may we follow you on the road of salvation and holiness
and reach the heavenly glory that you attained.
We shall praise you, with your Father and your Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

EVENING PSALMS
Psalm 141: 1-4
O LORD, to you I call; hasten to me;
hearken to my voice when I call upon you;

Let my prayer come like incense before you;
the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.

O LORD, set a watch before my mouth,
a guard at the door of my lips.

Let not my heart incline to the evil
of engaging in deeds of wickedness

With men who are evildoers;
and let me not partake of their dainties.

Psalm 142
With a loud voice I cry out to the LORD;
with a loud voice I beseech the LORD.

My complaint I pour out before him;
before him I lay bare my distress.

When my spirit is faint within me,
you know my path.

In the way along which I walk
they have hid a trap for me.

I look to the right to see,
but there is no one who pays me heed.

I have lost all means of escape;
there is no one who cares for my life.

I cry out to you, O LORD:
I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land
of the living.”

Attend to my cry,
for I am brought low indeed.

Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.

Lead me forth from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.

The just shall gather around me
when you have been good to me.

Psalm 119: 105-112
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.

I resolve and swear
to keep your just ordinances.

I am very much afflicted;
O LORD, give me life according to your word.

Accept, O LORD, the free homage of my mouth,
and teach me your decrees.

Though constantly I take my life in my hands,
yet I forget not your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but from your precepts I have not strayed.

Your decrees are my inheritance forever;
the joy of my heart they are.

I intend in my heart to fulfill your statutes
always to the letter.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

[SOOGHITO/HYMN]
O Lord, we have battled in your arena to the point of exhaustion.
We have borne the day of combat and the heat of ordeal.
In the service of your covenant, we have kept watch
during the night, confident in the fulfillment of your promise, We have made use of our talents with no concern for the pain.
On the Day of reckoning, when all will be laid before your throne of judgment, in your kindness, do not forget
what we have endured.
We belong to the Church, to which you have entrusted the treasure of hope;
Do not shame us as lazy servants or strangers,
but open your door for us that we may enter into the
dwelling of your chosen ones.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the eternal Son;
he became man in order to redeem us,
redeemed us by saving us,
saved us by his passion and death,
sacrificing his life and his pure blood:

by the cross, he reconciled heaven and earth.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this evening,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
O Christ,
by your passion we have obtained salvation.
We, who were the children of disobedient Adam and Eve and slaves of the lord of darkness,
have become children of the heavenly Father.
Our salvation cost a great price which you paid on the cross.
However, you did not consider the cost,
for it was your incomprehensible love for us that caused you to act.
You humbled yourself, took the condition of a slave
and were obedient to the point of death, death on a cross.
As we begin to commemorate your passion, we cry out:
“Come, life-giving passion which opens for us the gate of salvation and the path of safety.”
We ask only to believe in you,
to endure all the difficulties of life which you send us, to accept trials which come from you,
and to fulfill the duties of our vocations.
May we follow in your footsteps
and obtain the glory of the Father which you attained: the goal of all human life.
We shall praise you, your Father, and your Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

QOLO
The sower sowed a plant in his vineyard and cared for it.
It grew, spread its branches and extended its shade.

When the heir came seeking fruit, it bore only thorns.
In anger, the heir uprooted it and replaced it with a plant that will always give fruit.

Blessed are you, O Church, a vine planted with the Lord’s right hand.

ETRO
O Lord,
may we remain in the vineyard of your household,
a fruitful plant which nourishes itself with your body and quenches its thirst with your blood.
May the sun of your grace always shine upon us,
so that one day we may be replanted in paradise
where we shall praise you, for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
Christ, by his triumphal entry into Jerusalem
entered into the week of his passion and death.
Those who hated him were seized with anger,
set traps for him and plotted to kill him.

Blessed is your passion by which you saved us.
Blessed is your death by which you gave us life.

Glory to you, O Lord, by your passion and resurrection you reveal that you are God.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Book of Genesis
Genesis 37: 3-11
Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons, for he was the child of his old age; and he had made him a long tunic. When his brothers saw that their father loved him best of all his sons, they hated him so much that they would not even greet him. Once Joseph had a dream, which he told to his brothers: “Listen to this dream I had. There we were, binding sheaves in the field, when suddenly my sheaf rose to an upright position, and your sheaves formed a ring around my sheaf and bowed down to it.” “Are you really going to make yourself king over us?” his brothers asked him. “Or impose your rule on us?” So they hated him all the more because of his talk about his dreams.

Then he had another dream, and this one, too, he told to his brothers. “I had another dream,” he said; “this time, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” When he also told it to his father, his father reproved him. “What is the meaning of this dream of yours?” he asked. “Can it be that I and your mother and your brothers are to come and bow to the ground before you?” So his brothers were wrought up against him but his father pondered the matter.
A Reading from the Letter to the Romans
Romans 5: 1-11
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us.
For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly.
Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew
Matthew 26:
14-56
Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said,
“What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The teacher says, “My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.” ’ ”

The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover.
When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” He said in reply, “He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” He answered, “You have said so.”
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.” Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Then Jesus said to them, “This night all of you will have your faith in me shaken, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be dispersed’; But after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee.” Peter said to him in reply, “Though all may have their faith in you shaken, mine will never be.” Jesus said to him, “Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter said to him, “Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you.” And all the disciples spoke likewise.
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples,
“Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress. Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me.” He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, “My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!” Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. He left

them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again. Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand.”
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests and the elders of the people. His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, “The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him.”Immediately he went over to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and he kissed him. Jesus answered him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then stepping forward they laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus put his hand to his sword, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels? But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way?”
At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me. But all this has come to pass that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
EPHREMIAT
The God-Man enters the garden of Gethsemani.
He does this to teach us that he was both almighty God and obedient man.
He takes with him Peter and the sons of Zebedee,
the most faithful of his disciples.
They will witness his abjection just as they witnessed his glory on Mount Tabor.

With effort he prays in sadness and anguish,
contemplating the torments they have in store for him.
With false testimony they will deceitfully accuse him of treason.

Watch and pray not to be tempted.
The benevolence of God will enable you to resist all evil.
The spirit is ardent and its strength is gathered,
but the flesh is weak and in need of prayer.

You, who are afflicted with sadness for your only Son, we have only you to intercede for us at the judgment.
He granted you constancy during the affliction
because you submitted to the divine will.
Grant hope to your servants who are saddened by
your affliction.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
we offer you glory;
may your mercy be granted to us in the world to come.

HOOTOMO
Let us confess, adore, and praise the holy and glorious Trinity: Father, Son, + and Holy Spirit.

TRISAGION

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Holy are you, O God;
Holy are you, O Strong One;
Holy are you, O Immortal One;
have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord, forgive us and have mercy on us.
Lord, hear us and have mercy on us.
Lord, accept our worship and our prayers.
Lord, come to our assistance and have mercy on us.

LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who are in heaven,
hallowed be your name;
your kingdom come;
your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

O Lord
the night and the day are yours;
you uphold the light and the sun.
Through your power you direct the sequence of the seasons.
O Lord,
you have brought the day to its close and called forth the night.
Be for us that great Day that never ends.
In the evening let your light shine in our hearts,
and in the darkness of the night,
enlighten us with the knowledge of your truth.
And so, through all the days of our lives,
we shall praise you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
Amen.

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE
Let us thank God for all the graces he has bestowed on us this day which has passed in calm and peace.
Let us recall our failings against the commandments of God an the Church in thought, word, deed, or omission.

We ask for God’s pardon as we pray.

“Forgive us, Jesus!”

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Glory be to you, O Lord.
Glory be to you, O Lord.
Glory be to you, O Lord.

God,
Father in heaven,
by your living and holy name,
keep us from evil and lead us not into temptation:
for we c all upon you, O Lord, our God, our constant hope, glory to you for ever.

O Lord, our Lord,
may our humble worship be pleasing to you;
may our prayers come before you and our actions give
you honor.
Let your mercy, kindness, help, grace and divine love be poured abundantly upon us poor sinners,
both in heaven and on the earth
which you have created in your goodness.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever.
Amen.

DISMISSAL
Peace be with you.
And also with you.

O God,
through the prayers of your Mother and the saints who h ave
believed in you;
through the prayers of the prophets, apostles, martyrs and confessors;
through the prayers of the just, the priests, the holy fathers, the pastors and doctors of true faith;
through the prayers of N., Pope of Rome, N., our Patriarch, and N., our Bishop,
forgive your people and have mercy on your flock.
May God bless, forgive, sanctify, purify, an keep each of the faithful united with us in this spiritual office.
May mercy and compassion be upon us and all the faithful who dwell here.
May peaceful rest be granted to those who have died in the faith.
May the faithful who live here experience the protection of his victorious cross.
May we and all his servants who adore him with bowed head, receive the mercy of the holy and glorious Trinity:
Father, Son, + and Holy Spirit,
to whom be glory now and for ever.
Amen.

May God forgive your sins,
pardon your failings,
and deliver you from the power of the enemy.
May he grant you the remission of your offenses.
Go in peace, and pray to Christ for me.
