TUESDAY OF PASSION WEEK Safro (Tuesday Morning)

TUESDAY OF PASSION WEEK Safro
INTRODUCTION
DOXOLOGY
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
O Lord,
your passion is a cause of both sadness and joy for us, you desired and endured it whole heartedly.
Through your passion, may we be fortified against temptations.
Guide us on our way,
grant us victory over the enemy,
and make us worthy of the kingdom,
that we may praise you, for ever. Amen.

GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ,
in recalling your passion we are saddened,
but its memory also fills us with joy.
For you and for us, it is both sorrowful and joyful;
it kills and gives life;
it brings humiliation and glory.
For us it is necessary and there is nothing equal to it.
For you, it is both feared and desired.
Because of your passion may we feel the sadness which brings repentance
and the joy which does not forget you.
Thus, all sadness and joy will be for your glory,
now and for ever. Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Only in God is my soul at rest;
from him comes my salvation.

Psalm 62
Only in God is my soul at rest;
from him comes my salvation.

He only is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all.

How long will you set upon a man and all together beat him down
as though he were a sagging fence, a battered wall?

Truly from my place on high they plan to dislodge me;
they delight in lies;

They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse.

Only in God be a rest, my soul,
for from him comes my hope.

He only is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed.

With God is my safety and my glory,
he is the rock of my strength; my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O my People!
Pour out your hearts before him;
God is our refuge!

Only a breath are mortal men;
an illusion are men of rank;

In a balance they prove lighter,
all together, than a breath.

Trust not in extortion; in plunder take no empty pride;
though wealth abound, set not your heart upon it.
One thing God said; these two things which I heard:
that power belongs to God, and yours, O Lord, is kindness; and that you render to everyone according to his deeds.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
Only in God is my soul at rest;
from him comes my salvation.

HYMN
All you people,
venerate your King and be full of respect.
Be gentle when you remove his crown.
Because of your disobedience he has become motionless.
Grieve and cry for yourselves, for it is you who deserve the tears.
Stand, but bow you head; it is because of your pride that he has suffered.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
as we recall your passion,
we ask you to protect us from the fear of suffering,
from the fear of humiliation in the face of difficulty, and from the fear of weakness in the face of trial.
May we accept all our duties as the will of God.
Assist us with your grace so that we may offer the
Most High glory and praise, for ever. Amen.

NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus, our Lord, Begotten of the Father, he manifested himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of his light.

Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.

His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.

Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.

He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.

Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.

Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with hope and salvation.

When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.
The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.

Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ,
may our sufferings be a path of glory to the
Father as were yours.
May we accept them with patience as you did,
and sanctify them with love in order to attain the
goal you reached.
We shall glorify you, with your Father and your Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.

Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;

Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for he commanded and they were created;

He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.

Praise the LORD from the earth;
you see monsters and all depths;

Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;

You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;

You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.

Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,

Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,

Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;

His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.

Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.

Alleluia.

Psalm 149: 1-6
Alleluia.

Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.

Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.

Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;

Let the high praises of God be in their throats.

Alleluia.

Psalm 150
Alleluia.

Praise the LORD in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.

Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.

Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.

Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.

Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.

Let everything that has breath
praise the LORD!

Alleluia.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the One who descended from the heavenly heights to the depths of the earth
and yet remained the exalted Most High.
He, the eternal living One, died on the wood of the cross at Golgotha.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning.
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
O Lord,
you are the Victim who perfected the sacrifices of the Old Testament
and fulfilled the visions of the prophets.
You are the savior who assumed our mortal condition
in order to ransom us from eternal death.
You are the Light which descended from the Father of lights, and inhabited the darkness of the flesh
in order to enlighten it and all humanity.
You, who found yourself too weak to carry the cross,
are the powerful One who at each moment creates the
universe and support it by your Word.
You, the living One from whom comes all being,
died for us to give us life in abundance.
We now offer you our prayers so that they might rise with the fragrant incense.
May we be as bright as the morning light,
purified by the fire of penance
and made spotless by the aroma of love.
Accept the prayers of your whole Church,
from sinners and the just,
from young and old,
from religious men and women,
from the monasteries and the churches,
from every place where your name is known and your
passion is glorified.
With one voice may we glorify you,
now and for ever. Amen.

QOLO
In the upper room, Jesus revealed the mystery of his love.

He also revealed the mystery of who was to betray him.

The disciples were saddened and questioned each other.

ETRO
O Christ,
accept our prayer made in union with that of the
entire Church.
We beg you to plant in our hearts
the roots of Christian life,
and the virtues of faith, hope and love.
May we live according to the inspiration of the Spirit and glorify you on earth,
so that one day we may glorify you in heaven, for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
Come, glorify the Son who descended from the heavenly heights in order to be raised up on the wood of the cross.

O Christ, glory to the humiliation to which your obedience to the Father and love for humanity has impelled you.

There is no greater love than to give one’s life for one’s friends.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Prophet Jeremiah
Jeremiah 2:
12-21
Be amazed at this, O heavens, and shudder with sheer horror, says the LORD. Two evils have my people done: they have forsaken me, the source of living waters; They have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that hold no water. Is Israel a slave, a bondman by birth? Why then has he become booty? Against him lions roar full-throated cries.

They have made his land a waste; his cities are charred ruins, without inhabitant. Yes, the people of Memphis and Tahpanhes shave the crown of your head. Has not the forsaking of the LORD, your God, done this to you? And now, why go to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Why go to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates? Your own wickedness chastises you, your own infidelities punish you. Know then, and see, how evil and bitter is your forsaking the LORD, your God, And showing no fear of me, says the Lord, the GOD of hosts. Long ago you broke your yoke, you tore off your bonds. “I will not serve,” you said. On every high hill, under every green tree, you gave yourself to harlotry. I had planted you, a choice vine of fully tested stock; How could you turn out obnoxious to me, a spurious vine?
A Reading from the Second Letter to the Thessalonians 2 Thessalonians 2: 1-13
We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand. Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one doomed to perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a god — do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene.

And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord [Jesus] will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming, the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie, and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved. Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie, that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned. But we ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth.
A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew
Matthew 26:
57-27-26
Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Peter was following him at a distance as far as the high priest’s courtyard, and going inside he sat down with the servants to see the outcome. The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward who stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it.’ ” The high priest rose and addressed him, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?” But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “You have said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see ‘the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power’ and ‘coming on the clouds of heaven.’ ” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need have we of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy; what is your opinion?” They said in reply, “He deserves to die!”
Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him, saying, “Prophesy for us, Messiah: who is it that struck you?” Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. One of the maids came over to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about!” As he went out to the gate, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazorean.” Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man!” A little later the bystanders came over and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; even your speech gives you away.” At that he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately a cock crowed. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: “Before the cock crows you will deny me three times.” He went out and began to weep bitterly.
When it was morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate, the governor. Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, deeply regretted what he had done. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? Look to it yourself.” Flinging the money into the temple, he departed and went off and hanged himself. The chief priests gathered up the money, but said, “It is not lawful to deposit this in the temple treasury, for it is the price of blood.” After consultation, they used it to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why that field even today is called the Field of Blood. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of a man with a price on his head, a price set by some of the Israelites, and they paid it out for the potter’s field just as the Lord had commanded me.” Now Jesus stood before the governor, and he questioned him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You say so.” And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he made no answer.
Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?” But he did not answer him one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, “Which one do you want me to release to you, Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus called Messiah?” For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over. While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him.” The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus. The governor said to them in reply,
“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They answered, “Barabbas!”
Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” But he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted the louder, “Let him be crucified!” When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. Look to it yourselves.” And the whole people said in reply, “His blood be upon us and upon our children.” Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.
