Monday Evening

PENTECOST Ramsho

INTRODUCTION
DOXOLOGY
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory forever.
Amen
OPENING PRAYER
Christ our God,
pure splendor of the Father,
you sent your Spirit of life on your holy apostles.
On this evening of Pentecost
may we celebrate the feast of the descent of the Holy Spirit
in purity and holiness,
and prepare to receive your divine gifts.
We shall exalt the glory of the life-giving Trinity:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
now and forever.
Amen.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures forever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
on the day of the descent of the Paraclete, the
Comforter,
give us faultless justice,
so that having received his heavenly gifts
we may cast off the old man completely.
We shall become pure dwelling places for your divinity,
advance in good deeds throughout our lives,
and carry your name before all with pride.
You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
now and forever.
Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God.
You are great indeed!

Psalm 103
Bless the Lord, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits;

He pardons all your iniquities,
he heals all your ills.

He redeems your life from destruction,
he crowns you with kindness and compassion,

He fills your lifetime with good;
your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord secures justice
and the rights of all the oppressed.

He has made known his ways to Moses,
and his deeds to the children of Israel.

Merciful and gracious is the Lord,
slow to anger and abounding in kindness.

He will not always chide,
nor does he keep his wrath forever.

Not according to our sins does he deal with us,
nor does he requite us according to our crimes.

For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.

As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he put our transgressions from us.

As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him,

For he knows how we are formed;
he remembers that we are dust.

Man’s days are like those of grass;
like a flower of the field he blooms;

The wind sweeps over him and he is gone,
and his place knows him no more.

But the kindness of the Lord is from eternity
to eternity toward those who fear him,

And his justice toward children’s children
among those who keep his covenant and
remember to fulfill his precepts.

The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.

Bless the Lord, all you his angels,
you mighty in strength, who do his bidding,
obeying his spoken word.

Bless the Lord, all you his hosts,
his ministers, who do his will.

Bless the Lord, all his works,
everywhere in his domain.

Bless the Lord, O my soul!

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.

Antiphon:
Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God.
You are great indeed!

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Holy God, the giver of life,
to you be praise and thanksgiving.
Today you descended upon the apostles
assembled in the upper room.
You gave them life and taught them new languages,
so that they might announce the joyful good news
to well-disposed hearts.
Enlighten our hearts, O Lord,
with your rich mercies,
give us the wisdom to stand before you with wonder and awe all our lives and
to teach your name to our brothers and sisters.
To you, Spirit of the Father and the Son, be glory and
praise with them,
now and forever. Amen.
EVENING PSALMS
Psalm 141:1-4
O Lord, to you I call; hasten to me;
harken to my voice when I call upon you.

Let my prayer come like incense before you;
the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.

O Lord, set a watch before my mouth,
a guard at the door of my lips.

Let not my heart incline to the evil
of engaging in deeds of wickedness

With men who are evildoers;
and let me not partake of their dainties.

Psalm 142
With a loud voice I cry out to the Lord;
with a loud voice I beseech the Lord.

My complaint I pour out before him;
before him I lay bare my distress.

When my spirit is faint within me,
you know my path.

In the way along which I walk
they have hid a trap for me.

I look to the right to see,
but there is no one who pays me heed.

I have lost all means of escape;
there is no one who cares for my life.

I cry out to you, O Lord:
I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

Attend to my cry,
for I am brought low indeed.

Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.

Lead me forth from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.

The just shall gather around me
when you have been good to me.

Psalm 119:105-112
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.

I resolve and swear
to keep your just ordinances.

I am very much afflicted;
O Lord, give me life according to your word.

Accept, O Lord, the free homage of my mouth,
and teach me your decrees.

Though constantly I take my life in my hands,
yet I forget not your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but from your precepts I have not strayed.

Your decrees are my inheritance forever;
the joy of my heart they are.

I intend in my heart to fulfill you statutes
always to the letter.

Psalm 117
Praise the Lord, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures forever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.
Alleluia.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the one God in three Persons:
the Father, Source of life;
the Son, begotten of the Father before all the ages;
and the Spirit of love between the Father and the Son;
one in being, one in power, one in will,
one God who is ever blessed and true.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this evening,
and all the day of our lives, now and forever. Amen.
SEDRO
Father,
we always give you thanks for your mercy and love,

but especially on this day when you poured out,
and continue to pour out, your Spirit on your children,
whom you created in your image and likeness.
Today the Consoling Spirit came upon the frightened apostles; the tongues of fire rested upon them,
and inflamed them with an ardent apostolic zeal.
Today the Master sent the Spirit of truth who gives witness
to him.
The disciples received the strength of the Spirit,
and witnessed to him in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, Samaria and to the very ends of the earth.
Today they heard a sound coming from heaven;
tongues seeming to be of fire divided
and fixed themselves on each of those gathered in the upper room.
The were all filled with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of life, who speaks through the prophets and apostles.
He is one in substance with the Father and the Son,
the Spirit of truth who settled upon Christ in the Jordan.
He forms the catholic and apostolic Church and gives it life.
And now we beg you, O Holy Spirit,
Spirit of strength, knowledge and fear,
Spirit of wisdom, understanding, compassion and true love;
sanctify us, body and soul, and we shall be resplendent and spotless sheep.
Heal us of our egotism and enkindle in us the fire of your love; implant in our spirits the true faith of the apostles;
place within our hearts that good hope and strong consolation which will raise us above the vanities of this world.
Do not allow us to live with anything that might alienate us from you and the holiness of your love:
enmity, envy and hatred.
Pour out upon us your gifts, the bearers of life, as you did upon the apostles.
Wherever we may be, we shall confidently bear witness by our lives: in our leisure and our work, in our thoughts and words, and
by the whole demeanor of our lives through the day and night.
Give us your true life in this world,
and in the world to come we shall glorify you by our deeds,
and praise you with the Father and the Son,
the life-giving
Trinity, forever.
Amen.
QOLO
Lord, forgive your flock: on your feast it rejoices over your gifts and offers you praise with the apostles whom you have strengthened today.

Today grace has descended on the upper room of Sion,
the Consoling Spirit has come down upon the apostles: they receive the gift under the form of tongues of fire.
Today Peter and John stood and spoke in new tongues; those who heard them were struck with astonishment. The whole Church
adores the Spirit of truth, the Consoler, who has given wisdom to simple hearts and offer him glory.
ETRO
Holy Spirit,
you give holiness to the saints and wisdom to simple hearts,
you came down upon the apostles and gave them strength to
bear witness.
Receive and sanctify these prayers which we offer you with
our incense.
Grant us to walk according to your gifts, the givers of life, without fear or blame.
Then we shall belong to your dwelling places, carry your name, and announce your salvation.
The world shall live by you and glorify the consubstantial Trinity, now and forever.
Amen.
READINGS
MAZMOORO
Glory to the One who descended and settled upon the upper room; he gave learning to the ignorant and wisdom to simple hearts.
Come, let us praise the Lord who descended upon the upper room, let us sing to God our Savior who gave wisdom to simple hearts.
Glory be to the Shepherd who enriched his flock with priests and bishops, with altars and offerings.
SYNAXARION
On the fiftieth day after Passover — in Greek, “Pentecost” — there was celebrated in Jerusalem the feast of the Gathering, and from all the corners of the globe the Jews assembled in Pilgrimage, in memory of God’s gift of the law to Moses on Mount Sinai.
The apostles, the Virgin, a few relatives of the Lord, and a few women were assembled in the upper room. Around nine o’clock

in the morning God appeared to them as he has appeared to Moses on Sinai, in the midst of a storm and with violent wind; his Spirit settle upon them in the form of tongues of fire which rested on their heads. The Spirit gave them the power to evangelize the world by means of the new assembly of God’s people, the Church.
As a sign that God had now firmly established his Church, the gospel was understood by all who were present though they
spoke different languages and came from all races and nations.
This work of God’s grace may be compared to what happened to people of Babel, who spoke one common language and yet, because of
their sin, were no longer able to understand each other.
At Pentecost, although the people spoke diverse languages, they understood the single language of the apostles. This is clearly a symbol of God’s call to all people to unity and mutual understanding.
That is why the feast of Pentecost and the season which follows it invites us to meditate on the “One, holy, Catholic Church” which the Spirit has sanctified and which Christ founded on the apostle.
Let us ask the Lord to grant us this Spirit and the gifts that come from him, so that we may be true children of God and his Church, and zealous apostles willing to spread the gospel of Christ;
to him be glory forever. Amen.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew
Matthew 4: 1-17
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.” He said in reply, “It is written: ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you’ and ‘with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus answered him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’ ” Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, “All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.” At this, Jesus said to him, “Get away, Satan! It is written: ‘The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.’ ” Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him. When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled:
“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen.” From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
SUPPLICATION
O Son, by your resurrection you saved your Church from error; hear our supplications and have mercy on us.
You reconciled heaven and earth, grant peace to your Church and keep her children in the light of the cross.
Today the consoling Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles assembled in the upper room; today the Spirit of life descends upon the Church and sanctifies her children.
The Son of God ascended to the Father and sent the Spirit of truth, the Consoler, whom they awaited in the upper room.
They were strengthened by him and they went throughout the world,
preaching the gospel with courage.
They were clothed with strength and power, and gave witness to God before the world had its rulers. The doctrine of life spread itself in the universe and the voice of the good news, the bearer of life, was heard.

Glory to the Father, who chose the apostles of his only Son, adoration to the Son, who taught them the good news, the bearer of life: thanksgiving to the Holy Spirit, who descended upon them and
made them strong.
Let us remember the prophets, apostles and martyrs, all those who have labored and suffered in the vineyard of the Lord: Saint James, Saint Maron and his companions, and Saint Ephrem, the Harp
of the Holy Spirit. O God, through their prayers strengthen the weak, comfort the sick, grant pardon to the deceased, and forgive the faults of us poor sinners.
Exalt, O Lord, the memory of your Mother and your saints; through their prayers grant pardon to us and our deceased. Through the prayers of your Mother, the prophets, apostles and martyrs, watch over the living, and in your mercy, forgive those who have died.
HOOTOMO
Let us confess, adore, and praise the holy and glorious Trinity: Father, Son + and Holy Spirit. Amen.
TRISAGION
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy
Holy are you, O God;
Holy are you, O Strong One;
Holy are you, O Immortal One;
have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord, forgive us and have mercy on us.
Lord, hear us and have mercy on us.
Lord, accept our worship and our prayers.
Lord, come to our assistance
and have mercy on us.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who are in heaven;
hallowed be your name;
your kingdom come;
your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil,

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.
O Lord, the night and the day are yours;
you uphold the light and the sun.
Through your power you direct the sequence of the seasons.
O Lord,
you have brought the day to its close and called forth the night; Be for us that great Day that never ends.
In the evening let your light shine in our hearts,
and in the darkness of the night
enlighten us with the knowledge of your truth.
And so, through all the days of our lives,
we shall praise you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
To you be glory and may your mercy rest upon us,
now and forever. Amen.
EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE
Let us thank God for all the graces he has bestowed on us
this day which has passed in calm and peace.
Let us recall our failings against the commandments of
God and the Church in thought, word, deed and omission
We ask for God’s pardon as we pray:
“Forgive us, Jesus!”
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Glory be to you, O Lord.
Glory be to you, O Lord.
Glory be to you, O Lord.
God,
Father in heaven,
by your living and holy name,
keep us from evil and lead us not into temptation;
for we call upon you, O Lord, our God, our constant hope,
glory to you forever.
O Lord, our Lord,
may our humble worship be pleasing to you;
may our prayers come before you and our actions give you
honor.

Let you mercy, kindness, help, graces and divine love
be poured abundantly upon us poor sinners,
both in heaven and on the earth
which you have created in your goodness.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory forever. Amen.
DISMISSAL
Peace be with you.
And also with you.
O God,
through the prayers of your Mother and the saints who have
believed in you;
through the prayers of the prophets, apostles, martyrs and confessors; through the prayers of the just, the priests, the holy fathers, the pastors and teachers of the truth faith;
and through the prayers of N., Pope of Rome, N., our Patriarch, and N., our Bishop,
forgive your people and have mercy on your flock.
May God bless, forgive, sanctify, purify, and keep each of the faithful united with us in this spiritual office.
May mercy and compassion be upon us and all the faithful who
dwell here.
May peaceful rest be granted to those who have died in the faith.
May the faithful who live here experience the protection of Christ’s victorious cross.
May we and all his servants, who adore him with bowed heads,
receive the mercy of the holy and glorious Trinity
Father, Son, + Holy Spirit,
to whom be glory now and forever. Amen.
May God forgive your sins,
pardon your failings,
and deliver you from the power of the enemy.
May he grant you the remission of your offenses.
Go in peace, and pray to Christ for me.
