PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
during his holy Lent confirm our wills
so that we may reject all thoughts which disturb our love for you.
Establish us in your truth
that we may be filled with your gifts,
and so reach your paradise on the Morning of your
glorious resurrection
where we shall praise you with joy, for ever. Amen.
PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
My heart is steadfast, O God; my heart is steadfast.
Psalm 57
Have pity on me, O God; have pity on me,
for in you I take refuge.
In the shadow of your wings, I take refuge,
till harm pass by.
I call to God the Most High,
to God, my benefactor.
May he send from heaven and save me;
may he make those a reproach who trample upon me;
may God send his kindness and his faithfulness.
I lie prostrate in the midst of lions
which devour men;
Their teeth are spears and arrows,
their tongue is a sharp sword.
Be exalted above the heavens, O God;
above all the earth be your glory!
They have prepared a net for my feet;
they have bowed me down;
They have dug a pit before me,
but they fall into it.
My heart is steadfast, O God; my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and chant praise.
Awake, O my soul; awake, lyre and harp!
I will wake the dawn.
I will give thanks to you among the peoples, O Lord,
I will chant your praise among the nations,
For your kindness towers to the heavens,
and your faithfulness to the skies.
Be exalted above the heavens, O God;
above all the earth be your glory!
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Antiphon:
My heart is steadfast, O God; my heart is steadfast.
[HYMN]
Blessed are you, O Church, garden of the Beloved!
From a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, you have grown.
Your roots are in firm soil, sheltered from the winds; In your branches are the martyrs, they are a display of blood shed for the faith.
The birds quench their thirst at this marvel.
Psalms and prophecies fill your vast space.
You are the land of the Spirit, the meeting place of the nations.
Blessed are you, dwelling place of the guest, neighbor of the One who is near.
SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Glory to you, O Christ, Light of the world;
the one who follows you will not walk in the darkness.
This morning, with the rising of the sun we adore you and ask you to abide in our hearts.
Then our day will be enlightened by you,
and we shall attain the great Morning when we shall glorify you with the saints, for ever. Amen.
NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus, our Lord, Begotten of the Father, he manifested himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of his light.
Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.
His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.
Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.
He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.
Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.
Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with hope and salvation.
When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.
The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the glory of the just and upright people of the earth; together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.
Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
[HYMN]
At the end of time, when the combat will end,
You will come in glory for the final gathering of the bridal party; You will revive the dead who are sleeping, the scattered and the corrupt;
You will judge your servants with love – this is the happiness of paradise.
What has not occurred to the human heart and what the ear has not heard,
You have prepared as a reward for the combatants, at the fullness of time.
THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
strengthen us with your power;
help us with your powerful arm and we shall persevere in the arena of combat;
and in this tumultuous life the snares of the devil will not prevail over us.
And all the days of our lives, we shall offer you praise and glory,
now and for ever. Amen.
MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;
Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for he commanded and they were created;
He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.
Praise the LORD from the earth;
you see monsters and all depths;
Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;
You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;
You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.
Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,
Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,
Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.
Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.
Alleluia.
Psalm 149: 1-6
Alleluia.
Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.
For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.
Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;
Let the high praises of God be in their throats.
Alleluia.
Psalm 150
Alleluia.
Praise the LORD in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.
Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.
Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.
Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.
Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.
Let everything that has breath
praise the LORD!
Alleluia.
Psalm 117
Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!
For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Alleluia.
HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the Word, who in his love became man and was like us in all things but sin;
the Savior who redeemed and justified us.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.
SEDRO
Christ, our God and Savior,
you bent down toward the creature which you created,
and you took care of us, prescribing for us the remedies of life: the virtues of faith, hope and charity.
You rooted these three virtues in fasting and prayer
where the spirit rises above the senses and the soul, the body.
You were not content to encourage us with mere words: rather, you fasted for forty days spending the nights in prayer and conversation with your Father,
so as to teach us to fight in the tempests of this life.
Christ, our Shepherd and our Friend,
we ask you to remain with us always,
never allow us to enjoy life without you.
Abide in your Church and be to her the Light that is never veiled.
Strengthen her children so that they may walk in the way of your commandments,
seeking above all the glory of God, and not that of the world.
Teach us how to deepen in our hearts your commandments and your love;
may the mortal spirit of hate and egotism never dominate us.
May our Lent serve to contemplate your word of life and your gospel commandments;
then we shall know how happy are the poor, the meek, the merciful and those persecuted for the sake of justice.
Let us profit from these exhortations, and repent of our past faults.
Let us gather for the future a treasure that never passes, independent of the riches and possessions of this world.
May charity and justice be our guide
and let us not be deviated by our egotism.
Rather let us reflect your light before the eyes of all, so that the name of the Father in heaven may be glorified.
May our fast be blessed for us all,
so that we may be ready to pass into the joy of the feast of your resurrection.
Then we shall be worthy of your great Day
when we shall glorify you with the saints, for ever. Amen.
QOLO
You who fast, open your lips to praise the Lord. He gave you the words to praise and glorify him.
It is for his glory that the Lord gave you your tongue and intelligence. Let your heart never contain evil. do not fast only from food and drink, but be like the angels and offer yourself to the service and praise of the Lord.
ETRO
O Lord,
in your kindness receive the prayer and supplication of your servants;
accept the service of your worshippers.
Remove plagues from the earth and its inhabitants;
grant them peace and tranquility and they will always praise you, for ever. Amen.
READINGS
MAZMOORO
By fasting and prayer, the just have pleased God; children of the Church, fast and pray.
Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
May God who accepted the fast and prayer of our ancestors, accept our prayer and have mercy on us.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Book of Job
Job 10: 1-22
loathe my life. I will give myself up to complaint; I will speak from the bitterness of my soul. I will say to God: Do not put me in the wrong! Let me know why you oppose me.
Is it a pleasure for you to oppress, to spurn the work of your hands, and smile on the plan of the wicked? Have you eyes of flesh? Do you see as man sees? Are your days as the days of a mortal, and are your years as a man’s lifetime, That you seek for guilt in me and search after my sins, Even though you know that I am not wicked, and that none can deliver me out of your hand? Your hands have formed me and fashioned me; will you then turn and destroy me? Oh, remember that you fashioned me from clay! Will you then bring me down to dust again? Did you not pour me out as milk, and thicken me like cheese? With skin and flesh you clothed me, with bones and sinews knit me together.
Grace and favor you granted me, and your providence has preserved my spirit. Yet these things you have hidden in your heart; I know that they are your purpose: If I should sin, you would keep a watch against me, and from my guilt you would not absolve me. If I should be wicked, alas for me! if righteous, I dare not hold up my head, filled with ignominy and sodden with affliction! Should it lift up, you hunt me like a lion: repeatedly you show your wondrous power against me, You renew your attack upon me and multiply your harassment of me; in waves your troops come against me. Why then did you bring me forth from the womb? I should have died and no eye have seen me. I should be as though I had never lived; I should have been taken from the womb to the grave. Are not the days of my life few? Let me alone, that I may recover a little Before I go whence I shall not return, to the land of darkness and of gloom, The black, disordered land where darkness is the only light.
