Saturday Reading Healing of the Paralytic
Colossians 3:23-4:7
Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will receive recompense for the wrong he committed, and there is no partiality. Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, realizing that you too have a Master in heaven. Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; at the same time, pray for us, too, that God may open a door to us for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison, that I may make it clear, as I must speak. Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you know how you should respond to each one. Tychicus, my beloved brother, trustworthy minister, and fellow slave in the Lord, will tell you all the news of me. Praise be to God always.
Mark 7:31-37
Again he left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) And (immediately) the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and (the) mute speak.” This is the Truth. Peace be with you.
When we do something good we should do it not for ourselves or for others, but for the Lord. We are nice to others, not because they deserve it, nor because we desire praise and admiration, but because God is God and He made them. When we forgive, we should not forgive because the other person deserves it, but because God is God and He made them. We do things, not so other people will reward us, and ultimately not even for the reward which God will give to us, but because it is the right thing to do, and being the right thing to do it glorifies God.
