PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O God,
place your tranquility in our hearts,
your peace in our consciences
and your truth in our spirits.
And we shall praise you on this day when you calmed the
troubled soul of Joseph.
May we go forth with him to you in all confidence,
praising your living and holy name,
now and for ever.

Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Why are you so downcast, O my soul?
Why do you sigh within me?

Hope in God! For I shall again be thanking him,
in the presence of my savior and my God.

As the hind longs for the running waters,
so my soul longs for you, O God.

Athirst is my soul for God, the living God.
When shall I go and behold the face of God?

My tears are my food day and night,
as they say to me day after day,
“Where is your God?”

Those times I recall,
now that I pour out my soul within me,

When I went with the throng
and led them in procession to the house of God,

Amid loud cries of joy and thanksgiving,
with the multitude keeping festival.

Why are you so downcast, O my soul?
Why do you sign within me;

Hope in God! For I shall again be thanking him,
in the presence of my savior and my God.

Within me my soul is downcast;
so will I remember you

From the land of the Jordan and of Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.

Deep calls unto deep
in the roar of your cataracts;

All your breakers and your billows
pass over me.

By day the lord bestows his grace,
and at night I have his song,
a prayer to my living God.
I sing to God, my rock:

“Why do you forget me;
Why must I go about in mourning,
with the enemy oppressing me?
It crushes my bones that my foes mock me,
as the say to me day after day,
“Where is your God?”

Why are you so downcast, O my soul?
Why do you sigh within me?

Hope in God! For I shall again be thanking him,
in the presence of my savior and my God.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.

[HYMN]
The Hymn , “The Church” (page 168) may be sung after
the Psalm of the Day.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Jesus,
our light and holiness,
you are the source of all good things and fulfill our every need.
For the good of our souls you became flesh.
Purify us from corruption and deliver us from temptation
that we might give thanks to you, your Father, and your
Holy Spirit,
now and for ever.

Amen.

NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
Begotten of the Father, he manifested Himself to us.

He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the
radiance of his light.

Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises from us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.

His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.

Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.

He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.

Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.

Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to
the almighty Father,
who, in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with
hope and salvation.

When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in
weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.

The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the
glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.

Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great
glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.

[HYMN]
Either the Hymn, “The Return of Christ” (page 169) or the
Hymn, “Christ the Light” (page 169) may be sung after the
Nuhro.

THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Glory to you, Word of God,
out of love for us and for our salvation, you became flesh.
Fill our hearts with gratitude
and we shall praise you, your Father, and your Holy Spirit,
now and for ever.

Amen.

MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.
Praise the Lord from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;

Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for he commanded and they were created;

He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
you sea monsters and all depths;

Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;

You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;

You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.

Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,

Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,

Praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;

His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.

Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.

Alleluia.

Psalm 149:1-6
Alleluia.
Sing to the Lord a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.

Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

For the Lord loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.

Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing joy upon their couches;

Let the high praises of God be in their throats.
Alleluia.

Psalm 150
Alleluia.
Praise the Lord in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.

Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.

Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.

Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.

Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.

Let everything that has breath
praise the Lord!

Alleluia.

Psalm 117
Praise the Lord, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.

[CANTICLE]
The “Canticle of the Three Children” (page 168) may

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the glorious Son,
who sent his angel Gabriel to righteous Joseph,
to the Eternal Light who placed himself in the
womb of the Virgin.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever.

Amen.

SEDRO
One cannot worthily praise you, Joseph, the illustrious and just one.
You served Jesus and his Mother and remained with them day and night.
In your arms, you bore the One who bears all creatures
and nourished the One who provides nourishment for all.
You spoke with the eternal Word and were the guardian of his
Mother, the blessed Virgin, your pure betrothed.
You are blessed among the saints and illustrious among the chaste.
We proclaim on this your feast:
Hail, angel who accompanied the Savior and who
protected him from all evil;
Hail, star which illumines the Church and guides its
children on the right path;
Hail, glory of the just and honor of the elect.
We beseech you, O just one:
intercede for those who celebrate your memory today,
ask the Lord whom you served during your life,
to guide us and protect us from anything that harms
the soul and body.
May the Lord accept our incense (prayers) for the living and the dead
and we shall give glory to the life-giving Trinity,
now and for ever.

Amen.

QOLO
The angel found Joseph and dispelled the trouble in his heart.
“Do not be afraid, for that which is begotten in her is the holy One
and will be called the Son of the Most High.”
Blessed are you, all-pure One, for the Son of the Most High
King is within you.

ETRO
Lord,
you are the only Good One, who gives us all good things,
through this incense (our prayers) grant us mercy and
make us rejoice in your gifts,
that the perfume of holiness may always emanate from us.
We shall give you glory,
now and for ever.

Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
The angel put an end to the trouble which oppressed Joseph.
He removed all doubt and shared the truth with him.

Why are you downcast, O my soul, why do you suffer within me?
Hope in God; I will praise him forever, my salvation and my hope.

You accepted the prayers of the just before us,
now accept, Lord, our prayers and have mercy on us.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Prophet Jeremiah
Jeremiah 33: 14-21
The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall do what is right and just in the land. In those days Judah shall be safe and Jerusalem shall dwell secure; this is what they shall call her: “The LORD our justice.” For thus says the LORD: Never shall David lack a successor on the throne of the house of Israel, nor shall priests of Levi ever be lacking, to offer holocausts before me, to burn cereal offerings, and to sacrifice victims.
This word of the LORD also came to Jeremiah: Thus says the LORD: If you can break my covenant with day, and my covenant with night, so that day and night no longer alternate in sequence, then can my covenant with my servant David also be broken, so that he will not have a son to be king upon his throne, and my covenant with the priests of Levi who minister to me.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 7: 37-43
It was this Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you, from among your own kinsfolk, a prophet like me.’ It was he who, in the assembly in the desert, was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living utterances to hand on to us. “Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him; instead, they pushed him aside and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will be our leaders. As for that Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’
So they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands. Then God turned and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings for forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? No, you took up the tent of Moloch and the star of [your] god Rephan, the images that you made to worship. So I shall take you into exile beyond Babylon.’
